Useful tools for Mac
These are tools that I use frequently on MacOS which I think are worth sharing.
It’s also a backup in case I need it.
Shottr
Fantastic tool for grabbing and annotating screenshots. It also can blur or remove text, perform measurements, pick colours, crop, resize and more.
Rectangle Pro
I no longer use this since upgrading to the latest MacOS version, which has built-in window snapping. Rectangle Pro still has some advantages over the native window management, but is another thing to run in the background.
Widow manager with tile snapping. The Pro version is great for Stage Manger, because it can apply full screen without overlapping the window previews on the left of your screen.
FlashSpace
https://github.com/wojciech-kulik/FlashSpace
Workspace manager much better than built-in Spaces feature.
Stage Manager
I don’t use this much any more. Built-in way of managing windows on MacOS. I like it because I can actually see all of the open applications on my desktop.
A better solution would be if the dock behaved more like Windows taskbar, but here we are.
Raycast
Free replacement for Spotlight. It’s a lot more powerful, and you can add your own scripts to it.
iTerm2
Better terminal than the built-in one. It has a lot of features, but I mostly use it because it’s easier to use keyboard shortcuts like ⌘ + ←
to jump to the start of a line.
DropOver
Drag and drop files to a window that appears on top of everything else. It’s great for moving files around, rather than dragging something across 4 desktops only for it to not work.
Paragon NTFS for Mac
https://www.paragon-software.com/us/home/ntfs-mac/
Allows you to read and write to NTFS drives. It’s not free, but it’s worth it.
Homebrew
Package manager for MacOS.
BetterDisplay
https://github.com/waydabber/BetterDisplay
Switch screen resolutions easily. Paid version supports might higher brightness using HDR.
DBngin
Like Postgres.app, but also includes MySQL. Might just move to this from Postgres.app.
Obsidian
Markdown note-taking app. One of the only ones that supports symlinks apparently.
